Respirator Fit Testing
Proper respirator fit is critical for worker protection. MICRIST Environmental provides professional, OSHA-compliant fit testing services to help you maintain compliance and ensure your workers are properly protected.

Why Fit Testing Matters
An improperly fitted respirator can allow hazardous particles, gases, or vapors to bypass the seal and enter the breathing zone. Even a small gap can significantly reduce the protection a respirator provides.
OSHA requires that employers ensure respirators fit correctly before use in hazardous environments. Fit testing verifies that each worker has a respirator that provides adequate protection for their specific facial features.
Worker Safety
Ensures proper protection against airborne hazards
OSHA Compliance
Meet 29 CFR 1910.134 requirements
OSHA Fit Testing Requirements
- Annual fit testing for all respirator users
- Fit testing whenever respirator type changes
- Fit testing after significant weight changes
- Fit testing after facial surgery or injury
- Written respiratory protection program
Industries We Serve
We provide fit testing services for workers across a variety of industries.
Construction
Asbestos abatement, demolition, renovation, and general construction workers.
Industrial Facilities
Manufacturing, processing, and industrial plant workers exposed to airborne hazards.
Remediation
Environmental remediation, hazardous waste, and cleanup crews.
Healthcare
Healthcare workers requiring N95 or higher respiratory protection.
Fit Testing Methods
We offer both quantitative and qualitative fit testing to meet your specific requirements.
Quantitative Fit Testing
Uses instrumentation to measure the actual amount of leakage into the respirator. Provides a numerical fit factor and is required for some applications.
- Precise numerical results
- Required for some OSHA applications
- PortaCount or equivalent equipment
Qualitative Fit Testing
Uses test agents (saccharin, Bitrex, etc.) to detect leakage based on taste or smell. Suitable for half-mask respirators and filtering facepieces.
- Pass/fail determination
- Suitable for half-masks and N95s
- Cost-effective for large groups
What to Expect
Our fit testing process is straightforward and efficient.
Medical Clearance Verification
We verify that participants have received medical clearance to wear a respirator as required by OSHA.
Respirator Selection
If needed, we help participants select the appropriate respirator size and model for their facial features.
Fit Test Protocol
Participants perform a series of exercises while wearing the respirator to simulate workplace movements.
Documentation
Each participant receives documentation of their fit test results for employer records and compliance.
On-Site Fit Testing Available
We can come to your facility for group fit testing. More convenient and cost-effective for your team.
